Innovative ways to assess students

As many institutions have been forced to suspend most face-to-face teaching activity due to the Coronavirus pandemic, educators have had to adapt to new ways of assessing their students. In February, the theme for our Worldwide Wednesday Webinar Series is ‘Innovative ways to assess students’, where educators will explore novel methods in this area. What can IACLETOP offer you?

IACLETOP is our online Learning Management System designed to support educators and their students. IACLETOP will become IACLE’s central point to access our online resources and teaching materials, with access via the IACLETOP Login

  • Webinars – recorded live webinars are added to IACLETOP within a few days of the event taking place
  • IACLE Contact Lens Course (ICLC) – our contact lens curriculum is accessible through IACLETOP and is available in English, Chinese (simplified), Spanish, Korean, French and Italian with some content in German, Portuguese and Russian. You can access the ICLC here
  • Student Trial Exam (STE) – are you interested in assessing your students’ contact lens knowledge? This online tool is available for members. Read member and student feedback here
  • Case Report Series – a growing collection of interactive case reports in a new interactive format 

NEW this month

Our monthly Research Update email now has a designated area within IACLETOP, with access through the Dashboard. Catch-up with previous issues, along with summary videos produced by Executive Manager of Educational Programs Nilesh Thite. Nilesh reviews the contact lens-related research literature and provides a summary of the topical and most important articles. Access the Research Update area

Launching late February, the IACLE Library is a searchable database consisting of IACLE images, videos and PDFs. Members are able to upload resources they wish to share with other IACLE colleagues. Photographs from IACLE’s Image of the Month initiative can also be found here. 

New content for the Student Area for educators to use with their students is launching this month. This separate area allows educators to release the IACLE Case Reports to their students as and when they wish, giving educators control over which topics their students cover.

The Teacher Area within IACLETOP has been updated meaning members now have access to use the Case Reports as flipped classes using the Nearpod software.

Meet and Chat – Middle East

Attending conferences around the world allows members to meet others in their region, talk about how they use IACLE resources and to share teaching ideas they have put into practice. Due to congresses being unable to go ahead at the current time, EAME Regional President Judith Morris is introducing a ‘Meet and Chat’ initiative to connect members, to learn from one another and to discuss educational needs. The sessions will be conducted via Zoom and will take place four times a year for each part of the region – Europe, Middle East and Africa. The first Meet and Chat for our Middle Eastern members is on Saturday 20 February at 3.00 pm (GMT).

NEW this month

From this month, the IACLE Contact Lens Course (ICLC) has been made exclusively available via IACLETOP and is no longer available through our website to ensure members receive full benefits of IACLE membership.   

Our first Virtual Conference is available to view through IACLETOP in the IACLE Conferences area, along with other external meetings hosted by IACLE representatives. Lectures have been added to IACLETOP from the virtual International Contact Lens Education Program (ICLEP) that took place from 6-8 November 2020. Additionally, a presentation from the Autumn Conference of the Korean Society of Vision Science (KSVS) conducted as a hybrid conference on 20-21 November 2020 is also available to view on IACLETOP.   

During January, the number of Case Reports will increase from four to 10, with additional Case Reports offering alternative assessment methods. Certificates of completion will be provided.

Coming up in the New Year…

• The Case Reports are being restructured to provide learning opportunities for students, either as flipped classes or for self-directed learning.

• The IACLE Library is a new area consisting of IACLE images and videos, accessible via a searchable database. Members are able to upload any resources they wish to share with other IACLE colleagues.

The Teach. Learn. Connect. Initiative approaches 6-month point

IACLE’s TLC (Teach. Learn. Connect.) Initiative, designed to support educators during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, has been a substantial success in the first six months since its launch.

Some of the TLC Initiative achievements include:

• A total of 876 members have signed up for IACLETOP, our Learning Management System
• Over 1,000 students from 26 institutions worldwide have sat the new online Student Trial Exam (STE)
• Since the launch of the TLC Initiative, 50 new members have joined IACLE
• Facebook and Instagram have seen an increase in engagement due to the initiative, gaining over 3,200 followers across both platforms 
• More than 200 delegates tuned in live to IACLE’s first-ever Virtual Conference
• At least 8,000 members and their students have tuned in to 70 live global, regional and national TLC webinars, now available on IACLETOP

To support our members as the recovery from the pandemic continues, we will be extending our TLC Initiative into 2021 and adding further valuable benefits:

• A new program of weekly live webinars on a global, regional or national basis
• The IACLE Contact Lens Course will be exclusively available via IACLETOP, with more translations into core and other languages
• The Fellowship Exam will take place in 2021, via IACLETOP, with preparation assistance through the platform
• A research-based Virtual Conference in April 2021
• Educators will be able to develop their own learning environment for their students on IACLETOP

Almost 350 educators worldwide join myopia webinar series

Throughout November, IACLE brought members and international speakers together for a weekly program of webinars on Myopia Management. We heard from global experts Professor Nicola Logan, Professor Padmaja Sankaridurg (pictured), Professor Mark Bullimore and Dr Kate Gifford who discussed topics such as myopia prevalence in children, controlling myopia, the effect of vitamin D on myopia, outdoor activities and myopia, and myopia progression.

Four IACLE Case Report Series are now available in a new flipped classroom format and can be accessed via the Teacher Area through the IACLETOP Dashboard. This format utilizes the Nearpod software and allows educators and their students to review each case using discussion boards and instant polling in an engaging online environment to stimulate conversation.

When registering for the Student Trial Exam (STE), your own dedicated Student Area is made available to give support to students in the assessment journey, and also create a space for members to develop and deliver teaching material. For more information, please contact Professor Craig Woods.

Coming up…

Content for the Case Report Series will continue to grow, adding a total of 10 series. These cases will soon be available in a dedicated format for members to offer their students as a self-directed learning opportunity. Educators can determine when and how cases are released, and students will receive a certificate of completion.

The first four case series were launched at the end of October, and in a first for IACLE, certificates of completion will be awarded.

Virtual conference brings members worldwide together

More than 200 delegates watched live online as IACLE hosted its first-ever virtual conference, to bring the focus ‘Back to contact lenses’ (26 September). IACLE’s board and staff members, educators and industry representatives from across the globe discussed their thoughts and experiences on the current state of the contact lens industry, education and practice. The conference is now available to watch on IACLETOP.

The latest IACLE Contact Lens Course (ICLC2020) is now available to access via IACLETOP. The previous version (ICLC2015) is translated into Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish and Korean, with some content from the original ICLC available in German, Portuguese and Russian.

Did you know?

All members can now access the Teacher Area – this is an area that provides information on the Online STE, plus user guides to help you make the most of IACLETOP. When registering for the Online Student Trial Exam, a dedicated Student Area is made accessible. A number of our educator members have already started to create learning content for their students.

Updating and transferring the IACLE Case Report Series to IACLETOP is now underway. New interactive options for self-directed learning will be added, great for using with students as flipped classroom content.

NEW this month

The IACLE Contact Lens Course (ICLC2020) is now available to access via IACLETOP, as well as via our website under Member Login. The six modules are delivered in an online format or as downloadable files.


Coming up…

From this month, the previous version of the course – ICLC2015 – will be available on IACLETOP in six different languages. The highly popular IACLE Case Report Series is currently being restructured and reviewed, and will be accessible in a more interactive way. 

Are you thinking of completing the IACLE Fellowship? The next Fellowship Exam is scheduled to take place in 2021 and IACLETOP will provide help with preparation. Look out for more information to come.

Save the date for a half-day virtual conference

On Saturday 26 September, IACLE is hosting a virtual conference to ‘Bring the focus back to contact lenses’. A range of topics will be discussed including next steps for contact lens education, practice and for the industry. We will hear from educators themselves and also from the perspective of Industry through a panel discussion. Look out for the agenda details.

IACLETOP

IACLE has officially launched its Online Student Trial Exam (STE) which is now live on IACLETOP. The STE is designed to support educators whose students are unable to attend their institutions in a face-to-face setting or who wish to assess their students’ knowledge online. The STE will initially be conducted in English, with translations into Spanish, Korean, Chinese (Simplified) and Bahasa to be completed by September.

IACLE is pleased to announce that the first of its series of Flashcards will be available on IACLETOP from this month. The Flashcards are A4 sheets plus PowerPoint and Nearpod presentations summarising key aspects of a particular skill – such as soft lens application and removal – that can be used as a reference source, a reminder of the steps of a specific skill as well as the basis for a practical class on the topic.

The experience of adapting to virtual learning – a panel discussion by educators and their students

IACLE’s next global webinar will take place on Tuesday 7 July with a panel discussion on ‘Adapting to virtual learning with experiences from educators and their students’, led by IACLE’s President, Dr Shehzad Naroo, Vice President, Professor Philip Morgan and Lecturer in Optometry & Vision Science at Deakin University, Dr David Hammond. The discussion will be led by Executive Manager of Educational Development, Professor Craig Woods. This webinar will explore the different experiences of how both the educators and their students have adapted to online learning and what future developments they would like to see. We will hear from the students themselves as they discuss their own personal experiences.
