Register now for our Virtual Conference


Join us on Saturday 23 October from 12 noon – 3 pm UK time (BST) for our third global virtual conference themed ‘Education and Practice: All CLEAR’. The conference is based around the British Contact Lens Association’s (BCLA) Contact Lens Evidence-Based Academic Reports (CLEAR) initiative that launched in March 2021. The aim of CLEAR was to provide the latest research information across a wide range of contact lens-related topics for eye care professionals and educators. Several authors involved in writing the papers will speak on their areas of expertise at our Virtual Conference.

NEW this month

New versions of the IACLE Contact Lens Course curriculum are available as a package with access through the IACLETOP Library. The package contains all lectures from the ICLC2020 in a ‘view only’ format. This allows educators who have access to their own Student Area to import the package, release any chosen lecture and create additional teaching and assessment materials orientated around the ICLC2020 presentations. More information on the Student Area.

Recordings from our global Virtual Conference themed ‘Integrating research into education’ are available to view on IACLETOP through the IACLE Conferences tab

For those members who have registered for the Fellowship Exam in November, we are running monthly virtual support workshops, with the theme changing each month. A guide on how to use Fellowship Exam Area within IACLETOP and the structure of the exam will be discussed in the June session. These workshops will run until the exam and will be available in local languages. The first English-speaking session takes place on Tuesday 1 June at 12 noon UK time (BST) and a recording will be available in the Fellowship Exam Area within IACLETOP after the event has taken place.

Virtual conference connects members from around the globe

More than 150 delegates watched live online as IACLE hosted its second global virtual conference, to discuss integrating research into education. IACLE’s Board, staff members, and educators from around the world shared their knowledge and experiences on a vast array of topics related to research in contact lens education. NEW this month

The Fellowship Area designed to support and assist those sitting the Fellowship Exam launches on Thursday 1 April. The area allows members to join study groups, understand different methods of assessment, sit mock exams, and chat to other members who are also taking the exam. The member support area is available in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Bahasa. Registration for the Fellowship Exam opens on 1 April and the Fellowship Area will only be accessible for those who have registered for the exam. 

Did you know?

You can schedule meetings with other members sitting the Fellowship Exam to discuss queries or share study plans within the Fellowship Area.

NEW this month

The Distance Learning Program, designed to improve educators’ contact lens knowledge and prepare them for the Fellowship Exam, launches on IACLETOP this month. The DLP is a series of assessments designed to guide members through the IACLE Contact Lens Course module by module. There are four phases to the self-study program to allow members to adjust to the online environment. After working through each section of the ICLC, members complete a related assignment, submitting directly through IACLETOP with instant feedback available. Once members are satisfied with their progress, they move onto the next phase. This cycle repeats until all modules of the ICLC are covered. Progression is managed with each phase having a staggered released date. 

The newly redeveloped Student Area allows educators to develop their own teaching materials, their students can access a dedicated copy of the IACLE Case Report Series and IACLE Global Webinars, launches this month. The Student Trial Exam is also administered here. In 2021, a special rate registration fee applies per student to access the area and is based on the fee structure on our Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) Grouping:

• Group 1 US$5 student registration fee

• Group 2 US$10 student registration fee

• Group 3 US$15 student registration fee

Please note this fee is a special rate offered in 2021. The IACLE Board will review the fee structure after assessing the initial rollout and revisions may take place in 2022. 

Executive Manager of Educational Development Professor Craig Woods has produced a video guide on how to use the Student Area.

Did you know?

You can access IACLETOP via the Canvas app on your mobile phone or tablet. There are three versions of the app – Canvas Teacher, Canvas Student and Canvas Parent. Download the Teacher app for your own access with your students using the Student app. Try it out today and let us know your feedback. 

The IACLETOP Team has added language icons to the resources available in additional languages. Please see the IACLETOP Dashboard to view.

The IACLETOP Team has redesigned the Flashcards page allowing members to easily select the language they wish to view the resource in. We plan to model other areas where translated materials are available. 

All IACLE images and videos are now available to view and access in the IACLE Library. Access the Library from your Dashboard.

Coming up in the New Year…

The Fellowship Area launches next month to coincide with the opening of registration for the Fellowship Exam. After registration, members will continue their preparation and find mock exams in this area to familiarize themselves with the different exam environment and assessment. This area will be available in English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean.

  • IACLE Contact Lens Course (ICLC) – our contact lens curriculum is accessible through IACLETOP and is available in English, Chinese (simplified), Spanish, Korean, French and Italian with some content in German, Portuguese and Russian. You can access the ICLC here
  • Student Trial Exam (STE) – are you interested in assessing your students’ contact lens knowledge? This online tool is available for members. Read member and student feedback here
  • Case Report Series – a growing collection of interactive case reports in a new interactive format 

NEW this month

Our monthly Research Update email now has a designated area within IACLETOP, with access through the Dashboard. Catch-up with previous issues, along with summary videos produced by Executive Manager of Educational Programs Nilesh Thite. Nilesh reviews the contact lens-related research literature and provides a summary of the topical and most important articles. Access the Research Update area

Launching late February, the IACLE Library is a searchable database consisting of IACLE images, videos and PDFs. Members are able to upload resources they wish to share with other IACLE colleagues. Photographs from IACLE’s Image of the Month initiative can also be found here. 

New content for the Student Area for educators to use with their students is launching this month. This separate area allows educators to release the IACLE Case Reports to their students as and when they wish, giving educators control over which topics their students cover.

The Teacher Area within IACLETOP has been updated meaning members now have access to use the Case Reports as flipped classes using the Nearpod software.

Meet and Chat – Middle East

Attending conferences around the world allows members to meet others in their region, talk about how they use IACLE resources and to share teaching ideas they have put into practice. Due to congresses being unable to go ahead at the current time, EAME Regional President Judith Morris is introducing a ‘Meet and Chat’ initiative to connect members, to learn from one another and to discuss educational needs. The sessions will be conducted via Zoom and will take place four times a year for each part of the region – Europe, Middle East and Africa. The first Meet and Chat for our Middle Eastern members is on Saturday 20 February at 3.00 pm (GMT).

NEW this month

From this month, the IACLE Contact Lens Course (ICLC) has been made exclusively available via IACLETOP and is no longer available through our website to ensure members receive full benefits of IACLE membership.   

Our first Virtual Conference is available to view through IACLETOP in the IACLE Conferences area, along with other external meetings hosted by IACLE representatives. Lectures have been added to IACLETOP from the virtual International Contact Lens Education Program (ICLEP) that took place from 6-8 November 2020. Additionally, a presentation from the Autumn Conference of the Korean Society of Vision Science (KSVS) conducted as a hybrid conference on 20-21 November 2020 is also available to view on IACLETOP.   

During January, the number of Case Reports will increase from four to 10, with additional Case Reports offering alternative assessment methods. Certificates of completion will be provided.
