NEW Register now for IACLE / BUCCLE Education Day
‘Research and evidence base related to our publications and presentations’ is the theme for this year’s IACLE / BUCCLE Education Day to be held in Manchester, UK on Wednesday 29 May. Organized jointly by IACLE Europe / Africa – Middle East Regional President Judith Morris and the British & Irish University & College Contact Lens Educators, this one-day event at Chancellors Conference Centre will precede the British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference & Exhibition (30 May – 1 June). NEW Lyndon receives his IACLE Award at GSLS
Congratulations to 2018 IACLE Americas Contact Lens Educator of the Year Professor Lyndon Jones of the University of Waterloo and Centre for Ocular Research & Education in Canadawhoreceived his award at the Global Speciality Lens Symposium in Las Vegas, USA (24 January). Michele Andrews, Senior Director of North America Professional & Academic Affairs at CooperVision, sponsor of the Educator Awards, handed over the certificate at a North American Educators’ event organized by CooperVision.

NEW IACLE adds anniversary resources for members
More resources are now available via our website for members to celebrate our 40th year, including a new slide template and 40th Anniversary presentation. Email IACLE Executive Director Bonnie Boshart at email@example.com for PowerPoint versions. Four videos, testimonials from our industry partners and links to press coverage are also on our anniversary web page. 40th year events will take place at regional and national meetings worldwide during 2019, and at four major international meetings.

A full-page advertisement in the January issue of Contact Lens Spectrum celebrating our 40th Anniversary, recognising IACLE’s impact and thanking our industry partners for their support was among media coverage to mark the start of our 40th year. A feature in the UK publication Optician (11 January) described IACLE’s early history and achievements. Journals and websites around the world reported on the 40th celebrations.

2019 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL NOW DUE
All members should now have received notices to renew their annual membership. Access to our full range of membership benefits –including the New IACLE Contact Lens Course – is only available to IACLE members. If you have not received your renewal notice, please contact your local IACLE office. Membership expires when payment is not received.
This year you can also make an additional voluntary donation to mark IACLE’s 40th year and be acknowledged on our website. Look out for more details in your membership renewal notice.

MEET A MEMBER
Bulgarian member Anton Farladzhov first worked in an optical practice in 2010 when he was just 17 years old. Today he is sales manager and product specialist at UVI United Vision – distributor for CooperVision in Bulgaria – based in the capital Sofia. ‘Since the very beginning of my career, contact lenses have been a passion for me,’ says Anton. ‘My position requires me to keep up with the latest innovations in contact lenses. IACLE is a great opportunity to access valuable information. My IACLE membership helps me to upgrade my knowledge.’ Outside work, Anton’s interests are travelling and nature.

NEW Love Your Lenses tools on wearer safety
Tools to help eye care practitioners communicate safety messages more effectively to contact lens wearers are among the resources for this year’s Love Your Lenses Week (23-30 March). Now in its third year, the awareness week is run by the UK regulator the General Optical Council (GOC) in collaboration with industry partners and patient groups. A visual aid, pre-appointment questionnaire and lifestyle-based questions are the result of a GOC pilot project called Land The Message, which explored how contact lens practitioners could use behavioural science to increase the effectiveness of aftercare advice.

2018 IACLE Image Collection now online
Members now have exclusive access to the full collection of 39 clinical images in the 2018 IACLE Image Collection via our website. Photographs and descriptions include 27 cases donated by members but not featured in our Image of the Month, including this case of corneal granular dystrophy from Ms Gauri Kunjeer, from Nagar School of Optometry in India. Our Image Gallery now comprises five collections and libraries for teaching purposes.

IACLE supports new contact lens course in Mexico
Established two years ago, the optometry program at La Escuela Nacional de Estudios Superiores Unidad (ENES UNAM) in León, Mexico is to introduce a contact lens curriculum with support from IACLE. Lizbeth Uribe is the Dean of the program and IACLE member Juan Pimentel will be the contact lens educator in charge. They are committed to closer communication with IACLE and to establishing a new IACLE Resource Centre for educators and students.

NEW IACLE to play prominent role in APOC 2019
A team of IACLE presenters will be heading for Manila, Philippines in June to take part in the 22nd Asia Pacific Optometry Congress (17-20 June). Assistant Secretary Dr Gina Sorbara, and Education Team Lakshmi Shinde, Nilesh Thite and Dr Lewis Williams, will join IACLE AP Regional Coordinator Dr Cheni Lee on the program. IACLE will hold 40th Anniversary events in Manila, including a presentation at the Gala Dinner (18 June). The theme for the congress, which is jointly organized by the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry and Optometric Association of the Philippines, is ‘Optometry refocused: adapting to disruptive technologies and heightened consumerism’.

Cheni takes the lead at CE seminar in Indonesia
IACLE members and FIACLEs took part in a Continuing Education Seminar at Cicendo Eye Hospital in Bandung, Indonesia last month (20 January). A total of 286 optometrists attended this event. IACLE speakers and topics at the seminar were IACLE AP Regional Coordinator Dr Cheni Lee (pictured) – Contact lens update, Susanti Sirait – Contact lens-related complications, and Arief Wicaksono and Diki Prayudi – Soft toric lens fitting workshop.
Nilesh visits institute in Pune…
It’s been a busy month for IACLE Director of Educational Programs Nilesh Thite, who recently visited D Y Patil Institute of Optometry & Vision Science in Pune (18 January). Nilesh met with the head of optometry and briefed faculty and students on IACLE’s resources and programs. The institute administered the Student Trial Exam in 2018 and will also implement it in 2019. Nilesh distributed certificates to last year’s successful candidates.

NEW BCLA to broadcast first webinar for members
IACLE Vice President Professor Philip Morgan and communications specialist Sarah Morgan will host the British Contact Lens Association’s first Evening Scientific Meeting to be presented as an online webinar. The session, entitled ‘It’s in their hands! How to optimize contact lens compliance and ensure our patients love their lenses’ will run from 6.30pm to 7.30pm GMT on Tuesday 12 March. The webinar will explore evidence-based steps contact lens wearers should adopt to minimize their risk of contact lens-associated inflammatory events and infections.

Register now for IACLE meeting at Rome 2019
Registration is now open for our Educator Meeting in Rome, Italy to coincide with the European Academy of Optometry and Optics (EAOO) Annual Conference (18-20 May). The IACLE meeting will be on Friday 17 May at Università Roma Tre. The EAOO and Italian organization Federottica will be co-hosting the Rome 2019 conference alongside the European Council of Optometry and Optics Spring Meeting (16-18 May).

Ghanaian students win travel awards for BCLA 2019
Two students from Ghana will be travelling to Manchester, UK for the 2019 British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) Clinical Conference & Exhibition after winning travel grants. The BCLA will provide complimentary full delegate packages for Nutifafa Esther Senanu (pictured) from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, and Ebenezer Zaabaar from the University of Cape Coast to attend the conference, while the travel grant was awarded by not-for-profit organization The Optical Foundation.
