WHAT’S NEW AT IACLE?
NEW Make Your Mark at BCLA 2019
IACLE will celebrate 40 years of ‘Exceptional Education. Exponential Impact’ with special events at the British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference in Manchester, UK this month (30 May-1 June). Over the three days, you are invited to ‘Make Your Mark’ at the IACLE exhibition booth (Stand 6) on a time wall of milestones in the Association’s history. All members are welcome to attend a 40th Anniversary celebration and cake-cutting on Thursday 30 May at 5 pm at the booth. President Dr Shehzad Naroo will open an International Perspectives session on Thursday at 12 noon by marking 40 years of IACLE. The IACLE booth will next move to Manila, Philippines for the Asia Pacific Optometric Congress (17-20 June).
IACLE Travel Award winner takes the Oregon trail
FIACLE Maheswari Srinivasan (pictured) from Dr Agarwals Eye Hospitals in Chennai, India will be travelling to the USA this month, courtesy of her 2019 IACLE Travel Award. Maheswari is one of five Travel Award recipients this year and will attend the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators (AOCLE) Annual Workshop at Pacific University, Oregon (30 May-June 2). Three of this year’s recipients will attend the Asia Pacific Optometric Congress next month and one will travel to BCLA. Our thanks to AOCLE and BCLA for their help with supporting these awards.

Renew your membership to maintain FIACLE status
Members are reminded that if your IACLE membership is not renewed, your FIACLE status may be at risk. Annual membership renewal is required. Membership expires after two years of non-payment. FIACLEs are required to renew FIACLE status annually at the same time as membership renewal. After membership has lapsed for five years, FIACLEs will normally have to retake and successfully complete the Fellowship Exam in order to retain FIACLE status.

40TH ANNIVERSARY NEWS
Our 40th Anniversary video has featured at meetings across India over the past few weeks, including at events to mark World Optometry Day (23 March). The Annual Optometry Symposium (AOS) at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata and CL Gupta Eye Institute in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh were among those marking IACLE’s anniversary.

MEET A MEMBER
Meet Dr Mustafa Abdu, head of the Department of Contact Lenses, Faculty of Optometry and Visual Sciences at Al-Neelain University in Khartoum, Sudan. He comments: ‘IACLE has helped me acquire knowledge via its website and also gave me the chance to get to know effective people in my region.’ Mustafa likes to motivate people to give them the right path to success, and to help others in the profession and those outside of the profession too. ‘I want to work hard to improve contact lens practice in our region,’ he says.

Slit lamp direct parallelepiped illumination reveals three incisional scars on the cornea from a radial keratotomy procedure performed more than 35 years ago.

NEW IMI White Paper session at Academy 2018
Key findings from the International Myopia Institute White Papers – as summarized in the latest issue of our Research Update – were previewed in a special session at the Academy 2018 meeting. Now you can view the 1.5 hour IMI session, including the panel discussion that followed, on YouTube. Speakers include FIACLE Professor James Wolffsohn.

NEW WCO and BHVI join forces for Myopia Awareness Week
The World Council of Optometry (WCO) and Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) are collaborating on The Myopia Movement Awareness Week (13-19 May). The aim is to get people talking about myopia: ‘It is critical we engage with those at the frontline – parents, guardians and eye care practitioners – to ensure they have the understanding and tools to protect our children’s futures,’ said Yvette Waddell, CEO of BHVI.Follow the campaign on Facebook and Twitter
NEW Study reveals global cost of uncorrected myopia
Vision impairment caused by uncorrected myopia cost the global economy an estimated US$244bn in lost productivity in 2015, according to a new study published in Ophthalmology (126:3). The research estimated that 538m people had vision impairment resulting from uncorrected myopia, with the East Asia region, which included China, bearing the greatest burden of productivity loss of around US$150bn.

Two days, three FIACLEs and events in three countries
Last month FIACLEs were involved in educational meetings in three countries around the region in the space of just two days! Among them was IACLE Americas Regional Coordinator Guillermo Carrillo from Perú, who gave a talk during Sports Vision Training Course in Lima (14 April). He spoke about the opportunity for contact lens fitting and orthokeratology in sports eye care practice.

Scleral specialists to meet in Florida
Miami-based IACLE member Dr Elise Kramer is on the organizing committee for the 2019 International Congress of Scleral Contacts (ICSC) taking place on 25-26 July at the W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Congress topics will include upcoming scleral technologies, novel scleral lens uses, crosslinking and more. COPE credits are available and the meeting is timed to precede the Advanced Refractive Congress which runs on 27-28 July at the same venue. Find more details on 2019 ICSC see the website
Call for papers and posters for Academy 2019 and 3rd WCO
Among the features on the program is a Global Summit on Optometric Education, co-sponsored by the World Council of Optometry, American Academy of Optometry, and Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, to provide educators from optometric educational programs worldwide the opportunity to share education philosophies/teaching methods and to discuss challenges facing institutions.
IACLE China highlights resources at Xian institution
China National Coordinator Professor Wang Haiying (pictured centre) visited Xi’an Medical University, Shaanxi Province last month (10 April). Haiying met with the Dean, Professor Sun Jing, and team at the Department of Medical Technology, and spoke to students and faculty. The department has recently set up an IACLE Resource Centre. Haiying emphasized the advantages of joining IACLE and showed how to use its resources to prepare lectures. Find out more about IACLE Resource Centres here
Final call for IACLE Educator Meeting in Rome…
There’s just time to register for the IACLE Educator Meeting at Università Roma Tre in Rome on the afternoon of Friday 17 May. The meeting coincides with the European Academy of Optometry and Optics Annual Conference (18-20 May). Educators from four EAME countries will discuss the development of contact lens teaching in the region.
