MEET A MEMBER
For me, optometry is similar to playing music, says Dr Aliakbar Shafiee an optometrist at the Basir Research Eye Center in Tehran, Iran. At work, his interests are scleral lenses and contact lenses for sports but at home he likes to play Iranian classical percussion (Zarb) and to socialize with friends. Aliakbar says IACLE PowerPoints and website have helped him in his teaching. Here’s his top tip to help with contact lens teaching: ‘Sometimes very simple subjects are very hard for students. Please be patient as an educator and remember yourself when you were a student.

IMAGE OF THE MONTH
Tick burrowed on the upper eyelid margin
FIACLE Ajay Shinde of Sankara College of Optometry, Bangalore, India captured this image using a photo slit lamp with Canon camera mounted. This 46-year-old female patient visited the clinic complaining of pain in the left upper eyelid for the past three days. On examination a tick was found on the upper lid margin with one of its tiny legs moving. A gentle touch on the upper lid was very painful. A thorough history revealed the patient had interacted with pets (cats) about a week previously at a relative’s house.
WE’RE NOW STARTING OUR 2019 IMAGE COLLECTION. Download a submission form to add your image to our collection here. Look out for the winner of our 2018 Image of the Year in the January newsletter.
