IACLE surveys members to set agenda for the future

The aim is to listen to members, respond to your needs and bring the benefits of membership to even more contact lens educators worldwide. The results will help set our agenda for the next five years. The survey will be sent out to members in the coming weeks.

Look out for the survey with a Special Notice to members

NEW IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Limbal swelling due to mini-scleral lens edge

Guari Kunjeer Patel from Nagar School of Optometry in India captured this image using an iPhone 6S and slit-lamp biomicroscope. It shows limbal swelling alongside scleral indentation observed in the inferio-nasal quadrant post mini-scleral lens removal. This could be attributed to a tight fitting edge or lens flexure causing negative pressure under the lens resulting in limbal swelling, says Gauri.

NEW Contact Lens Event of 2017 and latest prescribing trends

2017 was the year of ‘the attack on the integrity of the contact lens prescription’, according to Contact Lens Spectrum Editor Dr Jason J Nichols. His Contact Lens Event of the Year is based on ‘the pervasive belief among the general public that a soft contact lens is a commodity.’ The January issue includes an annual report that highlights the continuing upward trend in daily disposable prescribing in the USA. International prescribing data in 30 countries, compiled by IACLE Assistant Treasurer Professor Philip Morgan and co-authors, show increased uptake of silicone hydrogel and multifocal contact lenses and reveal differences between markets worldwide.

Other cases highlighted are a patient who mistakenly used nail glue instead of eye drops, and a woman found to have 27 contact lenses retained in her eye which attracted global media coverage following a report in the British Medical Journal (5 July 2017).
