NEW French optometry to issue new guidelines for clinical practice

Optometry and contact lens practice in France could soon be taking a step forward, thanks to support from IACLE. Yannick Dyant (pictured), President of the Association des Optométristes de France, reports that the AOF is working on new guidelines for general optometric practice, based mainly on those developed in the UK by the College Of Optometrists and recently revised. ‘The section relating to contact lenses will probably need to be stronger to match our specific work environment,’ says Yannick. IACLE will review a draft of the AOF’s contact lens guidelines. AOF will also strongly advise any educator to join IACLE, and suggests the head of the contact lens department at each institution in France should be a FIACLE. Yannick thanked FIACLE Marina Barthe for organizing the recent IACLE meeting in Paris (21 April).

 MEET A MEMBER

FIACLE Mutahir Shah,a senior lecturer in optometry at the Pakistan Institute of Ophthalmology (PIO) Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, has good reason to be thankful for IACLE’s support. ‘When I was searching for contact lens teaching support for my MPhil course from the international community I spent more than a week in search of tutors. I never lost hope and at last succeeded when IACLE Director of Educational Programs Nilesh Thite helped me and arranged for educators to deliver online Web Lectures for the first time in Pakistan.’ Mutahir’s top tip for colleagues is useful too: ‘Ask for feedback regarding your teaching skills from your students so that you improve your skills for next time,’ he says.

 IMAGE OF THE MONTH

Migration of intrastromal ring

Dr Oscar Blanco of Blanco Grupo de Salud Óptica in Colombia captured this image using a Topcon SL D7 slit lamp with low, diffuse illumination (45o) and 10X magnification. Intrastromal ring surgery failed in this keratoconus case. The patient has been left with poor vision and now with hypersensitivity due to the superficial ring. Now, the best option for visual recovery is scleral lens fitting. The patient will require exhaustive follow-up due the vascularization towards the inferior ring and presence of deposits or infiltrates.
