Register now and prepare for 2019 Fellowship Exam  

Would you like to achieve FIACLE status and add more letters after your name? Registration is open for this year’s Fellowship Exam, to be held on Saturday 16 November. The 2019 administration is the first for which the New Distance Learning Program (DLP) is available to members to prepare for the exam. Each phase of the New DLP requires the completion of up to four assignments.

Research theme for May meeting in the UK

Interested in research? Then the IACLE / BUCCLE Education Day is for you. The event takes place in Manchester, UK on Wednesday 29 May and is organized jointly by IACLE and the British & Irish University & College Contact Lens Educators to precede the British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference & Exhibition (30 May – 1 June).

COMING SOON Winners of the 2019 IACLE Awards

Judging for the 2019 IACLE Awards is under way and recipients will be announced soon. There will be seven Awards this year – three to the IACLE Contact Lens Educators of the Year and four IACLE Travel Awards to mark our 40th Anniversary. The Awards will be presented at major international meetings during the year. The British Contact Lens Association and Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators will be among those supporting the IACLE Awards this year. CooperVision will again sponsor the Educator Awards.

40th presentations begin at events worldwide   

Our 40th year events will take place at regional and national meetings worldwide during 2019, as well as at four major international meetings. This month will see the first celebrations in the Asia Pacific and Latin American regions. Meet Semin Hong, director ofstudies at Shinsung University in Daejeon, Korea. ‘IACLE modules are very helpful for my contact lens classes,’ says Semin, who worked for 10 years in optical practice and in contact lens manufacturing before taking on a teaching role. Semin has this simple tip to hand on to colleagues: ‘Practice is the best method for understanding theory!’ Outside work, his interests are golf and other outdoor sports, and he loves to exercise and try new activities.

NEW International Myopia Institute White Papers

More than 85 global experts – including several FIACLEs – have contributed to eight White Papers covering aspects of myopia, published in a special edition of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. Developed by the International Myopia Institute (IMI), the papers summarize evidence from reports and peer-reviewed studies.

Myopia specialist Dr Jeff Walline of The Ohio State University is the latest educator to contribute a webinar to the GP Lens Institute. Presented at the 2019 Global Specialty Lens Symposium in January, the talk includes advice on talking to parents about myopia control options and how myopia progression can be slowed.

NEW CDC resources on healthy contact lens habits

‘Spring into Action’ is a new campaign by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to promote healthy contact lens habits, launched this month to coincide with US universities’ spring break. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) also has a one-minute animated video outlining ‘Eight steps to protect your sight from contact lens infection.’

FIACLEs take the lead at meeting in Argentina

FIACLEs Eduardo Salischiker, Eduardo Elvira, Sabrina Lara and Juan Pablo Luna (pictured left to right) represented IACLE at the 14th Jornadas de Óptica meeting in Córdoba city, Argentina this month (15 and 16 March). The group will offer 1.5 hours of lectures on ‘Contact lenses and dry eye’ and ‘Pediatric contact lens fitting’, along with 3 hours of workshops on ‘Scleral lenses’ and ‘Biomicroscopy’.  The event attracted around 200 attendees.

UP is latest venue for IACLE India Industry Days

IACLE India organized an Industry Day for the Department of Optometry at Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS) in Saifai this month (2 March). FIACLE Pushpendra Singh (pictured), Senior Manager Professional Services at Bausch + Lomb India, delivered various talks followed by a hands-on session. IACLE members Dr Kamal Pant (Dean and Head of Department), Aditya Tripathi,Gaurav Dubey and Priti Yadav joined the 130 students attending. Mr Singh was also a speaker at an Industry Seminar at Galgotias University in Uttar Pradesh (13 February), along with FIACLE Khemraj Nackwal. This event was attended by 74 students and five educators, including IACLE member Vikas Shrivastava.

NEW BCLA to feature session of international perspectives

‘Highlights of 2019: International Perspectives’ is among the special features of the British Contact Lens Association’s Clinical Conference program, which is now available online. IACLE President Dr Shehzad Naroo will chair the session of 10-minute presentations from seven countries. Keynote speakers for BCLA 2019 will be Dr Nicole Carnt (Australia), FIACLE Professor Lyndon Jones (Canada), Professor Eric Papas (Australia) and Dr Jeff Walline (USA). Early-bird registration rates apply for bookings before 31 March. The conference runs from 30 May – 1 June at Manchester Central.

IACLE members join program for Rome 2019

Members Philippe Seira (Switzerland), Stefan Bandlitz (Germany) and David Berkow (Israel) will be among the speakers the European Academy of Optometry and Optics (EAOO) Annual Conference in Rome (18-20 May). An IACLE Educator Meeting to coincide with the conference will run on Friday 17 May at Università Roma Tre. Italian FIACLE Fabrizio Zeri (pictured) is organizing the IACLE program, to be released soon.

Crossing continents: from Tennessee to Ghana

FIACLE Dr Deepa Chandrasekaran from the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Tennessee, USA will be travelling to Ghana in November, following an appeal for help in our December 2018 newsletter. Deepa will visit Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, to train students on how to fit contact lenses. Her visit, and other support, is being coordinated by Dr Dan Twelker of the University of Arizona, Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science.
