This month we visit the Philippines, where Dr Leanne Jeanne Encarnacion is clinical instructor at the Davao Doctors College in Davao City. ‘I’ve only been in practice for 3 years but I’m very passionate about changing the perceptions of Filipinos regarding contact lenses,’ says Leanne, who is currently studying for a Masters in Business Administration, majoring in medical entrepreneurship. So how has IACLE helped Leanne in her career? ‘I’m able to assess and manage my patients better with IACLE serving as my guide and reference, especially when handling special cases. I’m also able to assist my students in proper lens care and management, and give them a deeper understanding of contact lenses in general.’ And Leanne’s advice to colleagues? ‘Never stop exploring the world of contact lenses. Continue learning about them, reading journals and new research,’ she says. |

A heartless conjunctival massDr Liana Al-Labadi from An-Najah National University in Palestine submitted this image, taken on an iPhone 6. A 27-year-old Palestinian female presented to the clinic for evaluation complaining of reduced vision. She had a positive ocular history of multiple chalazion surgeries. Anterior segment examination revealed an elevated heart-shaped upper palpebral conjunctival mass with surrounding pseudomembrane. Ligneous conjunctivitis was suspected and a lid biopsy was ordered to confirm diagnosis. Click here for more information on Image of the Month. Download a submission form to send an image

Tributes paid to Manchester contact lens educatorDon Loran, described as one of the most outstanding educators in the field of contact lenses, has died at the age of 81. As lecturer and clinical director at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) from the early 1970s, Don instituted the first open clinics for final-year students. He modernized the syllabus and teaching of contact lenses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level at what was to become the University of Manchester. In 1979, Don was one of two UK educators who attended a meeting at the Bausch + Lomb European Contact Lens Symposium in Monte Carlo where it was agreed to establish an international version of the Association of Optometric Contact Lens Educators (AOCLE), to be known as IACLE. He subsequently served as a committee member to the new organisation. Read a tribute by Don’s former colleague, Professor Neil Charman, here |
