This month we meet Germaine Chua, lecturer at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) in Singapore, where she specializes in contact lens fitting and troubleshooting. Germaine spent 6 years in practice before joining NP. Established in 1963, the higher education institution has a total of 1,800 staff with more than 14,800 full-time and 3,000 part-time students. ‘IACLE provides good case studies for discussion with students. It promotes students’ critical thinking skills,’ says Germaine. Her top tip to share with colleagues? ‘Two-way feedback helps us to teach better and students to learn better. Different students respond differently to the same teaching method,’ she says. Outside work, Germaine enjoys reading and travelling. ‘And I’m adventurous when it comes to food!’

Soft prosthetic lens with clear pupil for cosmesis

Apoorv Paranjpe from Pune, India submitted this image, taken with a Samsung Galaxy J7 Max under slit-lamp Illumination. Silicone oil used in vitreoretinal surgery had shifted to the anterior chamber with which patient was not satisfied cosmetically (left). Secondary surgery to remove silicone oil was not recommended by the ophthalmologist. Although the patient had no functional vision in this eye, instead of giving a dark pupil lens a clear pupil lens was dispensed (right), since PLPR (perception of light and projection of rays) was present.

When is a line not a line? When it’s a Fleischer ring…

A small error has been identified in a sub-title of a slide in our Salazar Image Collection. Slide 109 in the Keratoconus sub-set identified a Fleischer ring as a Hudson-Stähli line. A correction has been made accordingly. The Salazar collection – the work of the late Ralph Salazar, a Venezuelan optometrist – is one of five image collections available via Image Gallery under Member Login.

Following a similar theme to the IACLE Congress on Contact Lens Education in September 2017, the program looked at proactive recommendation of contact lenses. IACLE Director of Educational Programs Nilesh Thite and FIACLE Yeshwant Saoji organized the conference, along with BIPOK (British Indo Pacific Orthokeratology Myopia Control Academy). Chennai institution is ‘getting ready with sclerals’

While many manufacturers are now producing scleral contact lenses, the number of practitioners with expertise in this area is not sufficient to meet demand,’ says IACLE’s Asia Pacific Regional President Dr Rajeswari Mahadevan (pictured center). The contact lens department at Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, India recently held a two-day workshop, ‘Getting ready with sclerals’, to help meet this demand (16-17 February). The program addressed refractive and therapeutic indications for scleral lenses and offered training in fitting and troubleshooting.
