The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the wide range of IACLE activities and provides direction for the Association.
IACLE Directors

Professor Philip Morgan – IACLE President
Philip Morgan is Professor of Optometry, Head of Optometry, Deputy Head of the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry, and Director of Eurolens Research at The University of Manchester. He is also Adjunct Professor at UNSW Sydney. His main research interests relate to the clinical performance of contact lenses, and he teaches on the same subject area at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has managed an annual international survey of contact lens prescribing trends since 1996. Read more

Professor Shehzad Naroo – IACLE Vice President
Professor Shehzad Naroo is a Professor at Aston University (UK) and teaches in the area of anterior eye. Shehzad’s research interests include contact lenses, dry eye, corneal biomechanics, laser refractive surgery, cataract and lens surgery, intraocular lenses, sports vision and business aspects of eye care. He has authored and co-authored over 200 publications (including peer-reviewed, editorials, textbook chapters, non-peer-reviewed etc.) Shehzad has successfully graduated 30 higher degree students (27 Doctorates, and 3 MScs), had previously had 5 post-doctoral researchers in his team and is currently supervising a further 9 doctoral students. Professor Etty Bitton – IACLE Secretary / Treasurer
Professor Etty Bitton completed her Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo (1988) in Canada, followed by a Master’s in Physiological Optics (1994) from the Université de Montréal in the area of tear film clinical physiology and its relevance in patients exhibiting dry eye. Prof Bitton presently holds the rank of full professor, and is the Director of the Externship Program at the School of Optometry at the Université de Montréal. She is a member of several national and international professional organizations. Her areas of interest are in the evaluation of the tear film, dry eye and contact lens wear. Read more

Dr Renée Reeder – Director
Dr Reeder Renée currently serves the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Optometry as the Department Chair for Clinical Affairs and holds the rank of Professor. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry and completed a residency in advanced cornea and contact lens management at Indiana University. Renée taught at the Illinois College of Optometry for 21 years serving in many roles, including contact lens residency coordinator, chief of the Cornea Center for Clinical Excellence, and coordinator of the ocular disease curriculum. Dr Byki Huntjens – Director
Dr Byki Huntjens is a Dutch optometrist, educator, and researcher working in London, UK. Following her bachelor’s degree in optometry from the Hogeschool Utrecht in the Netherlands, Byki completed her MSc and PhD at the University of Manchester, UK. She joined City, University of London in 2009, where she taught contact lenses for over a decade, and supervised several MSc and PhD students in the field of contact lenses, myopia, and dry eye. Recently, Byki became an independent consultant in contact lenses and dry eye. Read more

Fakhruddin Barodawala – Director
Fakhruddin Shamsheer Barodawala is a lecturer at the Faculty of Optometry and Vision Sciences, SEGi University, Malaysia. He completed his graduation and postgraduation at the Lotus College of Optometry, Mumbai, India, after which he pursued his career in academics and research. Fakhruddin has been associated with SEGi University, Malaysia for over 6 years, involved in teaching contact lenses, dispensing optics, low vision and advanced ophthalmic care. He was awarded the is a Fellow of IACLE (FIACLE) and a Fellow of ASCO-India (Dispensing Optics) in 2017. Read more
Regional Directors

Dr Kah Ooi Tan – Asia Pacific Regional Director
Dr Tan is a co-founder and the Director of Business Development at nthalmic. He has over 25 years of experience, from professional services, clinical affairs, and marketing to business management in the vision care industry and academia.
Prior to this, he served as a Business Development Director at Brien Holden Vision Institute and CEO of Brien Holden Vision Institute (China); held an academic position as Associate Program Director of the University of Manchester’s Optometry Program in Singapore; and worked in different management and commercial positions in CIBA Vision/Novartis, Ocular Sciences and CooperVision for Greater China and Asia-Pacific region. Professor Martín Edisson Giraldo Mendivelso – Americas Regional Director
Professor Martín Edisson Giraldo Mendivelso, is an Optometrist graduated from De La Salle University, Specialist in Anterior Segment and Contact Lenses from Santo Tomás University, Master in Vision Sciences from La Salle University. With teaching experience of more than 15 years, he currently works as Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Optometry program of De La Salle University. Member of the International Association of Educators in Contact Lenses (IACLE), and of the National Network on Visual Disability. Read more

Dr Fabrizio Zeri – EAME Regional Director
Dr Fabrizio Zeri is a researcher at the University of Milano-Bicocca and Visiting Research Fellow at Aston University in Birmingham.
He was educated and achieved his Diploma in Optometry at the Istituto Superiore di Scienze Optometriche of Rome. He graduated in Experimental Psychology at “Sapienza University” of Rome where also gained his PhD in Cognitive Neurosciences. He has been President of the Società Optometrica Italiana (Italian Optometric Association) and founder and secretary of the Accademia Italiana di Lenti a Contatto (Italian Contact Lens Academy). He is a FIACLE, FBCLA, FEAOO and FHEA. Read more
